Toys R Us Makes Major Comeback

Nearly a decade after the iconic toy retailer filed for bankruptcy and subsequently shuttered its stores across the United States, Toys “R” Us is opening 120 new locations across the country.

The expansion is being carried out in partnership with Go! Retail Group and will add 120 locations to the 40 standalone Toys “R” Us stores currently operating in the U.S., bringing the retailer’s total to 160.

The new locations will carry toys, collectibles and gifts from brands and entertainment properties including LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Pokémon and  KPop Demon Hunters. Some will offer more than shopping. Select stores will include candy shops and cafés.

Toys “R” Us’ ambitious expansion marks the latest chapter in a comeback years in the making for the company, which was once one of the dominant toy retailers in the United States.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2017 while carrying approximately $5 billion in debt. By the following year, it had liquidated its U.S. business and closed its remaining stores nationwide, ending an era for a chain that had become a fixture of American childhood.
